very fussy family! 03 Sep 2008

Im on a fairly tight budget, I need recipes for my family which consist of myself, my boyfriend & our toddler. This should be easy but my boyfriend and son are sooooo picky. My boyfriend wont eat any meat except for beef & lamb, he doesnt like vegetables unless all the flavours been boiled out of them in a stew, he wont eat anything saucy e.g. most pasta, sauce dishes/curries. Im not even allowed to buy baked beans or tinned spaghetti as he detests them so much. My son just rarely touches his dinner whatever it is. Our dinners are the same old thing over and over until my boyfriend has ate them so much he gets sick of them. Eventually there'll be nothing left and I also dont want to be doing 2 seperate dinners every night. All we eat is take-away (iv tried home made indians & pizzas but theyre not to his standards!) lasagne, lamb/beef roast and pie & mash. I dont like dinners like fried chicken, burgers, sausages, waffles etc (basically really unhealthy ones.) Between us we dont have many options I feel, someone please suggest something before we all starve to death!!

Are you asking everyone what they want to eat for dinner? Try not to because then you become a restaurant. If you already are then you may have to just modify what you are cooking a little. It is no big hassle steaming a few vegetables separately from those cooked in a stew. Carrots are particularly good. Put a few on everyone's plates. Gravy can always be poured on top. You and the toddler can have more.

Jamie's lamb burgers seem to be very successful. You can always use leaner lamb mince. You can always use the leaner sausages. I always grill sausages. What about baked potatoes? Chilli con carne - you can aways make the adult chilli a bit spicier once it is on your plate.

If you have a slow cooker try using that and then you can stick to the lamb or beef and vary the rest of the ingredients and easily add the steamed veg at the end.

Try and be hungry for supper. Don't snack. Go for a walk and then come back to the smell of potatoes baking or stew cooking. (You do have to have done the preparation though beforehand!) Try and sit down to meals together when you can. Good Luck!
