Refillables

Having recently bought two items because they said they used 75% less packaging. In the present climate of growing awareness of recycling etc., I thought I might suggest ‘Sainsbury's Refillables’.

You could have a range of products that would be served from behind a counter in much the same way as the cold meats and cheese.

One would bring in a bottle or plastic container to be refilled, a barcode would be printed out and stuck to the container, again in the same way as you do with cold meats.

You could have a large barrel of e.g. fabric softener, hand-wash, washing –up liquid, shower-gel. You could have a red/white wine of the month.

Suppliers would be advantaged by their exposure, and Sainsburys would undoubtedly be advantaged by their green credentials.

It is not a new idea, but one where the customer would benefit slightly in price and feel they were doing the right thing by re-using certain containers that would otherwise go into a landfill. A record of how many bottles/cartons had been saved could be displayed each month.

I would be interested to know your thoughts on this suggestion

I'm all for being greener, but I would find it inconvenient to take empty containers with me every time I shopped. What about the hygiene aspect of filling peoples own containers with food or drink? not to mention the queues it might cause, waiting for these to be filled. A lot of plastic bottles and containers are recycable now and you should be able to contact your council to ask them about the nearest recycling facilites. I was able to email my council, most of them have websites now.

You would have to be responsible for how clean your own containers were. They have been using their own containers in France for years for wine. But you could use the method for non edible products, such as hand wash, or fabric softener. It would take a bit more effort to remember the container, especially as some can't even remember a bag, but to me, it would be worth it.As for queues, do you see queues for the cold meat counter? Sometimes, yes.
As for plastics ,yes they can be recycled, but do you know where the plastic goes when you have sent it off for recycling? Because even a lot of councils don't even know where it goes. There have been reports recently that it get shipped half way around the world to be processed. How green is that?

i get the idea, dunno if it would work but i do understand where you are coming from....there is a fantastic range of cleaning products (not from sainsburys but from robert dyas) callled aquo, which are eco-clever, refill and reuse....and they really work, the glass cleaner is smear free and smells of fresh mint.....you buy an empty spray bottle which comes with a water soluble refill, all you do is drop it into the bottle, fill with warm water, wait a minute or two and away you go.....the refills are cheap which i handy as you aren't paying for more packaging everytime you buy a new refill you just reuse the bottle, which also cuts down on the number of trucks used to deliver it to suppliers eliminating CO2 emissions....the cleaners are phosphate free, smell great and the bottle and packaging are also 100% recylable....i'd reccomend it to anyone.....sainsbury's why dont you stock this or a similar product???? has anyone else tried these products and what did they think??? i'd give them 5 stars *****......
