History: Tokaji wines have enjoyed a long, glorious history. It was Louis XIV of France described them as “The wine of Kings and King of wines”. Royal Tokaji was established in 1990 by a group of vineyard owners and investors led by Hugh Johnson, the noted British author and wine historian. From the outset their goal has been to revive and bring back to international acclaim the wines of one of history's most renowned wine regions.
Regional information: The Tokaji wine region is one of the world's oldest demarcated wine regions and in 2002 was named a World Heritage site. The region lies 220 km to the north-east of Budapest and sits on a series of extinct volcanic hills which are between 100-200 metres above sea level. At the heart of the region two rivers converge and this creates rising Autumn mists which are essential for producing Tokaji's famed sweet wines.
Vinification: To concentrate the sweetness and flavours of the grapes, they will be left on the vine for an extended period of ripening. Once the desired sweetness is reached, they will be harvested by hand. From here the whole bunches will be pressed and the juice fermented before a portion of the wines are aged in oak barrels for 6 months to add further complexity.
