Sustainable fishing
What is sustainabilty?
It's about sourcing fish from fisheries that are managed so fish populations remain healthy and the fishing methods used minimise environmental impact. This means we can enjoy great quality fish now, and be confident of healthy fish stocks in the future.
MSC (Marine Stewardship Council) works with global fisheries to promote seafood traceability and sustainable fishing practices, Standards meet the world's toughest best practice guidelines and are helping to transform global seafood markets. All MSC labelled seafood can be traced back to a sustainable fishery.
Sainsbury's has been recognised as the 'best sustainable seafood supermarket' in the world in a league table published on 1 March 2017, a position we have maintained in 2018. The annual MSC Supermarket League rates British supermarkets on their sustainable seafood range. Sainsbury's reached the top spot in Britain and the top spot worldwide with the most MSC labelled products of any national supermarket with 225 MSC certified sustainable choices.

We aim to have 100% of our fish and seafood independently certified as sustainable by 2020 and we are already well on our way.
All of our cod and haddock is MSC certified.
We've been leading the way in sustainable fish for a long time. We launched our first MSC certified sustainable fish (Thames red herring fact fans) in March 2000 and were the first in the UK to do so.
We had 100 certified products by 2012, which was another first.
We sell MSC certified fish across all our ranges from canned to counters and even ready meals. And the fish in our in store cafès is MSC certified too.
