Penfolds has long maintained a system of numbered ‘bins' in the cellars at Magill where the finest wines were stored. History: Bin 8 was first made in 2003 and is a modern exemplar of Penfolds multi-regional and multi-varietal blending philosophy. Ripe, balanced fruit flavours are supported by softly integrated oak resulting in an impressive, smooth red wine. It was introduced in response to a heightened interest in shiraz and cabernet sauvignon blends, a classic.
Regional information: 82% Shiraz, 18% Cabernet Sauvignon 12 months in American oak hogsheads (22% new) and French oak hogsheads (6% new)
Vinification: Conditions in January and February provided some welcome relief, with cooler conditions and some welcome rain, which ensured the vines were able to finish the remainder of the season off well. While bunch weights and berry numbers were low across the major growing regions, the harvest produced some outstanding parcels of shiraz and cabernet sauvignon with strong varietal characteristics.
