History: Located near the town of Avignon, at the heart of the RhĂ´ne Valley, Bonpas is a former fortified convent given to the Carthusian monks by Pope Jean XXII en 1318. Our wines are the legacy of seven centuries of tradition, patience and hard work. Sophisticated and elegant, they embody the terroir and varietals of this famous region through their power and fruity taste
Regional information: Avignon is a historic city in southeastern France on the RhĂ´ne River, known for its medieval landmarks such as the Palais des Papes and Pont d'Avignon. Once the seat of the papacy in the 14th century, it remains enclosed by ancient walls and enjoys a Mediterranean climate ideal for winemaking. Located in the Southern RhĂ´ne Valley, it is also an important wine region and cultural centre, hosting the annual Festival d'Avignon.
Vinification: The grapes are grown on plots of rounded pebbles from the Ouvèze and Rhône river terraces, with soils combining smooth cobbles, clay, gravel, and limestone—conditions that help the vines produce wines with strong tannic structure and aromatic complexity. Fermentation is maintained at 25°C, with careful techniques such as alternating pumping over, settling, and controlled aeration to enhance anthocyanins and tannins, resulting in a rich, balanced, deeply coloured wine with powerful yet refined tannins.
